چکیده

The 16O, 17O and 18O abundances of howardites, eucrites, and diogenites have been used to assign them to a single ‘HED’ parent body, thought to be asteroid 4 Vesta. We report the first evidence of oxygen isotopic heterogeneity among HED meteorites indicating incompletely mixed sources. New high-precision oxygen isotope measurements of 34 HED meteorites reveal that most have the same v17OP, consistent with a very rapid early history of large-scale mixing on Vesta. However, howardites are on average very slightly enriched in 16O, whereas Ibitira, Caldera, Pasamonte, and ALHA78132 are 16O-depleted compared to other investigated eucrites. The v17OP of Ibitira is completely different from all other HEDs measured. Some of the results for eucrites and diogenites can be explained by partial melting and rapid mixing of the interior of Vesta. Others require a separate parent body or indicate that parts of the outer layer of Vesta retained some primary isotopic heterogeneity. The oxygen isotopic composition of howardites provides an upper limit for the amount of admixed carbonaceous chondritic material into the HED parent body regolith. 8 2004 Elsevier B.V. New oxygen isotope evidence for the origin of mesosiderites and main group pallasites

Introduction: Many groups of differentiated achondrites display limited oxygen isotope variation, plotting within a restricted portion of the three-isotope diagram immediately below the terrestrial fractionation line [1,2]. As a consequence, oxygen isotopes have until recently been of only limited value in deciphering the relationships between these meteorite groups. A case in point is the appa...

Impact Histories of Vesta and Vestoids Inferred

Introduction: The parent body of the howardites, eucrites and diogenites (HEDs) is thought to be asteroid (4) Vesta [1]. However, several eucrites have now been recognized, like NWA 011 and Ibitira, with major element compositions and mineralogy like normal eucrites but with different oxygen isotope compositions and minor element concentrations suggesting they are not from the same body [2, 3]....

A new type of solar-system material recovered from Ordovician marine limestone

From mid-Ordovician ∼470 Myr-old limestone >100 fossil L-chondritic meteorites have been recovered, representing the markedly enhanced flux of meteorites to Earth following the breakup of the L-chondrite parent body. Recently one anomalous meteorite, Österplana 065 (Öst 65), was found in the same beds that yield L chondrites. The cosmic-ray exposure age of Öst 65 shows that it may be a fragment...

MIL 03443, a dunite from asteroid 4 Vesta: Evidence for its classification and cumulate origin

The absence of dunite (>90 vol% olivine) in the howardite, eucrite, and diogenite (HED) meteorite suite, when viewed with respect to spectroscopic and petrologic evidence for olivine on Vesta, is problematic. Herein, we present petrologic, geochemical, and isotopic evidence confirming that Miller Range (MIL) 03443, containing 91 vol% olivine, should be classified with the HED clan rather than w...
